Holger Scheidt Group CD Release for THE TIDES OF LIFE @ ShapeShifter Lab Fri, April 10 at 7pm |
Holger Scheidt Group
THE TIDES OF LIFE
(Enja 9619) Street Date February 10, 2015 Holger Scheidt: bass Rich Perry: tenor sax Gordon Au: trumpet/ Victor Gould: piano Anthony Pinciotti: drums For Tides of Life, his third album as a leader (his first for the renowned German label Enja), the outstanding bassist/composer Holger Scheidt draws upon his personal favorite era in jazz history. “I love the quintets of the 1960s. Records like Miles’ ‘Nefertiti’ or Herbie Hancock’s ‘Maiden Voyage’ have elevated my understanding of music in a most powerful and important way. It was that period of Jazz that opened my ears for the large universe of music this world provides.” While Holger has freely experimented in a variety of forms, referring to the transcendent substance of that music is most appropriate for the highly personal journey on Tides of Life. Its six extraordinary compositions depict six distinct moods that every aware human being experiences and strives to understand as they learn about themselves and their destinies: failure, desperation, rage, calm, hope and triumph. “This music is autobiographical and completely subjective. Of course, I have been in all of those moods I describe with my record, again and again. And I have found that they are all connected and even depend on and cause each other. This recognition turns that subjectivity into universality and so there is solace as much as grounding in it. With this project I am seeking to describe a classic, timeless and universal dramaturgy of human life by referring to the means of a classic, timeless and universal style of music.” In this quest, Holger embraces the aesthetic substance that produces artistic achievements of the highest level; and along with his four collaborators, delivers fully on that purpose. Joined by tenor saxophonist Rich Perry, trumpeter Gordon Au, pianist Victor Gould and Anthony Pinciotti on drums, these five consummate artists achieve the synergy and unity of intent that are essential to this level of musical pursuit. In the front line, Perry’s full-bodied, muscular sound and fluid style harkens to the Wayne Shorter/George Coleman model of Holger’s inspirational material; while Au’s warmly compelling tone and articulate, lyrical expressiveness are ideally suited to Holger’s compositions. Gould’s approach to piano certainly possesses the sweeping range of Hancock, but also exhibits that darkly lustrous flavor of another ‘60s icon, Andrew Hill. Pinciotti’s highly impressive drumming is always impeccably tasteful, never ostentatious and always fully appropriate to the energy and drive needed to propel the music. While the virtuosity of all five musicians is fully apparent, it is always within the intent of the music, never manifested for its own sake. As is always essential for music of this nature, each “supporting” musician has to make the music entirely their own, but never losing the focus that their goal is to fulfill the vision of the leader – a highly challenging venture that each of these musicians achieves in exemplary fashion. Although the music is clearly a collective effort, it is unquestionably Holger’s album. He limits himself to two solos on the entire album, but his deeply wooded sound and vividly vibrant texture are always at the core of the music – focusing, shaping, driving, shifting and propelling the other musicians and the essence of the music forward toward his ultimate vision. The compositions are brilliant - complex and rich, inventive and lyrical, uplifting and delightful, and ideally structured for the explorations of the subject matter. And while the narrative may be rooted in the mood of each title, a full palette of emotional content is depicted on each piece, creating that linkage that Holger intended when he conceived this project. This is not an album where each track is filled with solos. With the exception of the final track, there are only two solos on each piece; the soloists chosen by Holger to best focus upon the goal of each composition. The material ranges from beautiful balladry to scorching ferocity with all stops in between, and the sequencing is structured in filmic fashion, telling a narrative story that plays out to its logical conclusion. The album opens in somewhat daunting fashion conceptually with failure – an evocative, atmospheric piece structured on a descending pattern and with a rubato pulse (employed at various times on the album, always handled flawlessly by the ensemble, never sacrificing rhythmic energy by its use). Perry’s virile solo develops into stormy turbulence and Holger’s emotive and lyrical solo is enthralling. Failure often leads to desperation, depicted here dramatically with tenor long tones and resonant piano chords bridged by a pensive trumpet-hewn pendulous theme. Au’s mellifluous solo – sounding occasionally like a flugelhorn – is a beautifully constructed lament leading into a delicate, filigreed and buoyant tale told by Gould. Desperation begets rage, a vigorously up-tempo journey with a swirling theme fired by the tenor and stoked by Pinciotti’s sizzling drums. Gould’s luminescent solo is fiery and rhythmic, and Perry’s explosive solo is powerfully visceral, building to one climax after another. As rage wanes, calm ensues; a lovely, winsome theme that blossoms through Au’s trumpet lead, shadowed warmly by tenor. Perry’s solo is graceful in its lyricism and Holger tells a most expressive story with his brilliantly crafted solo. A deliciously lilting theme, splashed liberally with tenor/piano unison passages offers hope. Gould superbly blends chords and runs in his stirring solo, while Perry’s is complex and terrifically inventive. Finally, we reach triumph, its colorful fanfare-like theme built on insistent piano chords. Gould’s solo features luminous interplay with bass and drums; Au’s articulate and energetic solo swaggers vehemently; and Perry’s potent, spirited solo is jubilant; all culminating in the ensemble taking the piece out in celebratory and enthusiastic fashion. A radiant conclusion to a totally captivating journey through the full gamut of emotions. The profound and lofty intent of the concept in no way interferes with the exuberance, accessibility and the sheer joyousness of the music contained on the album – a stellar achievement on every level. |

Clark peacefully went home to God on Saturday, February 21st in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, surrounded by his family, students and friends. He was known internationally for his signature musicianship and gratitude for his love from many. For nearly half a century, Clark's greatest passion was helping to make young musicians' dreams come true. He was a tremendous source of inspiration, of love, of respect, of decency, and of human rights. He was one of the first recruits of the United States Navy when black musicians were given the Rating of Musician in 1942. From being one of the few musicians who played as a featured soloist in both the Count Basie and the Duke Ellington Orchestras, to being the first black staff musician at NBC, Clark had multiple bands including big bands, youth bands and other ensembles. He was one of the most recorded jazz musicians in history on more than 900 albums. Clark's devotion towards mentoring young musicians influenced the lives of worldwide master talents such as Quincy Jones, Miles Davis, Wynton Marsalis and Dianne Reeves amongst countless others. Clark inspired everyone by example. As he was quoted in the documentary about his life and love for mentoring students, Keep on Keepin' On, "Your mind is a powerful asset. Use it for positive thoughts and you'll learn what I've learned. I call it getting on the plateau of positivity." Clark will be laid to rest at the Woodlawn Cemetery following the service. Funeral services entrusted to P.K. Miller Mortuary, Pine Bluff, Arkansas and George H. Weldon Funeral Home, New York City. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Jazz Foundation of America which has helped over the years to make sure that Clark's needs were met. Please note on donations that they be made "In Honor of Clark Terry" to help them continue this work. |

MY DANCE is a collection of Judi Silvano’s original songs, each with a story of its own. Conceived from Judi’s experiences of life and love, some tunes have lyrics while others leave the story to the listener’s imagination. These are collaborative
arrangements between two creative improvisers at the top of their game.
Judi Silvano has toured and recorded with artists including Kenny Werner, Joe Lovano, Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, Steve Swallow, Tim Hagans, Bill Frisell, Paul Motian, Mal Waldron, Larry Goldings, Vic Juris, Victor Lewis, Rufus Reid, Dick Oatts, Ingrid Jensen, Janice Friedman, Allison Miller, George Garzone, Michael Formanek, Gerry Hemingway and Newman Taylor Baker. This is my second CD, it’s a recording of some of my favorite songs. They include a variety of standards, most of them firmly established in the jazz genre. My choice of the upbeat tunes was based on their natural swinging rhythm, and I love to swing. I chose the ballads because I can feel the lyrics composed by the song writers. I consider them poignant and touching. Then there are two other selections, one a really beautiful Bossa (“My Little Boat”), which is just so romantic, and the other (“How little We Know”), gives some important insight into the nature of human relations. I’m proud to say that this music we call jazz is a passion for me, as I know it is for many others. I believe this CD upholds the best tradition of the music, by way of a quality production. Certainly, my band gave me all the support I needed and I was blessed to have had some of the baddest cats with me on the NYC scene today. I was particularly honored to have special guests Patience Higgins, Kenyetta Beasley, and Eric Wyatt (my nephew) commanding the horn section on the date. Their addition to my regular world-class rhythm section of Marcus Persiani, Eric Lemon, and Darrell Green made the session a joy. In addition, Michael Broby’s recording studio ensured that the sound was done right. Finally, the orchestration of our studio sessions and much of the success of this project was due to Rob Crocker, radio personality on WBGO-FM. Enjoy!

The Samba Jazz rejoices in Cincinnati and beyond the beat of Phil DeGreg & Brasilia
The emotions it conveys Phil DeGreg & Brasilia is indescribable, this quintet is established at the University of Cincinnati where educators are almost all the same and is one of the current examples of how large or small every corner of the world is present the Latin Jazz , but more importantly executed by his own people.
Quintet joined them guitarist Bruno Mangueira, come from Rio de Janeiro, who upon hearing the proposal DeGreg Phil and his group did not hesitate to accept the invitation and even composed a song for the CD "Brazilian People" called 'Ano Novo' .
Phil DeGreg & Brasilia was born at the University of Cincinnati to light up with joy and good music to all these sectors and beyond. DeGreg (piano), Kim Pensyl (trumpet, flugelhorn), Rusty Burge (vibraphone), Aaron Jacobs (low)
and John Taylor (drums and percussion).
The selection of the pieces in "Brazilian People" was, besides very well acted, very successful. Compositions of Hermeto Pascoal, Marcos Silva, Joao Donato, Edu Lobo and the legendary Antonio Carlos "Tom" Jobim, besides the contribution of De Greg Burge and Mangueira, make this CD a musical rainbow.
The Latin Jazz has become a musical phenomenon of our times and of course presentations and productions as performing Phil DeGreg & Brasilia give even more luster to our musical genre.
The video you see below evokes the etiquette of Phil DeGreg & Brasilia in the execution of "Triste" (T. Jobim) which is the last row of the CD "Brazilian People".

Notes on Phil DeGreg:
Phil DeGreg began playing the piano in his childhood and now performs as a jazz pianist internationally. His earliest jazz influences were Bud Powell and Bill Evans, but he is accomplished and comfortable in a wide range of jazz styles, ranging from mainstream to bebop to Brazilian jazz. His versatility has led to professional performances with dozens of internationally recognized jazz artists, as well as leading and recording with his own groups. Phil DeGreg has released eleven recordings as a leader and has been recorded as a sideman on many other jazz projects. He is also featured with J.J. Johnson on the video "J.J. Johnson Live in Concert." His most recent recorded project called "Melodious Monk" done in conjunction with trumpeter Kim Pensyl features the music of Thelonius Monk in duo and trio settings without drums. A review in All About Jazz writes: "…he exhibits an excellent understanding of the complex compositions, and the stride tradition from which Monk sprang…they succeed because they have an undeniable affection for Monk, and their performance is top-notch….Phil DeGreg's masterful piano interprets Monk brilliantly and Kim Pensyl's trumpet is the perfect complement".
A native of Cincinnati, Phil completed a degree in psychology from Yale University before becoming a professional musician. After three years working and studying music in Kansas City, he finished a masters degree at University of North Texas, and subsequently toured the world for a year with Woody Herman's Thundering Herd. Later he was the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts grants. He was named one of the 10 finalists in Jazziz Magazine's 1995 "Keyboardists on Fire" competition, and was a 1996 finalist in the Great American Jazz Piano Competition. For 16 years, he served as the house pianist at Cincinnati's famous Blue Wisp Jazz Club, accompanying visiting artists on weekends. His jazz festival appearances include the North Sea, Pori, Monterey, Montreux, Brecon, Wigan, and Elkhart Jazz Festivals. Phil has performed in clubs and concerts throughout the United States, and in the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Brazil. In 2008 Phil was awarded a four month Fulbright Fellowship to lecture about jazz in Brazil.
Phil considers music to be a gift and is dedicated to sharing his love of jazz through teaching. He is currently Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, where he teaches jazz theory, arranging, piano, and ensembles. He has taught for the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops (since 1982), the UK Jazzwise Jazz Camps (since 1996) and has served on the faculty of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, the Miami Valley Summer Jazz Workshops, and the Jim Widner Jazz Camps. He has appeared as a visiting artist/clinician at colleges and high schools throughout the U.S., Europe, Central and South America. Phil has presented lecture/demonstrations to the International Association of Jazz Educators, the National Group Piano Teachers Association, the Ohio Music Educator's Association, the Ohio Music Teachers Association, and the Music Teachers National Association, and has published articles for Jazz Player Magazine. In 1995 he published "Jazz Keyboard Harmony," a chord voicing method written for non-pianists and beginning jazz pianists, which is now used in private teaching and at universities throughout the world.

Cellar Live launches in the West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg, on March 20, 2015, "Dialectics" Curtis Nowosad
"The good son returns home", is the case of Curtis Nowosad based in New York City, but who is a native of Winnipeg, Canada, and now returns to his hometown to celebrate with his people and his label Cellar Live launch of "Dialectics".
Here are some considerations Nowosad own:
Like most generic labels, “straight-ahead jazz” is a bit mystifying.
Notes on Curtis Nowosad:
Here are some considerations Nowosad own:
Like most generic labels, “straight-ahead jazz” is a bit mystifying.
According
to one definition, “straight-ahead” emerged as a generic label to differentiate
mainstream improvised Black American Music from “fusion”, “Avant-garde” and
other equally unwieldy subgenres. “Straight-ahead” was jazz that preserved
conventional forms like chorus-by-chorus chord changes and was supposedly what
the mainstream returned to in the 80s after benighted forays into electric
experimentation and other digressions; it was the path forward.
But Jazz
History isn’t a through-line or a single prevailing sensibility plus tangents,
nor is it a series of decade evolutionary stages. Jazz is communities of
artists with differing but related sensibilities from which streams of
influence emanate and move through time concurrently. The throughline is an
illusion just as most labels and genre designations are, too.
As a preview here offer you the video of the live recording of Speak no Evil (Wayne Shorter) which is the part that opens the Album "Dialectics". The musicians: Curtis Nowosad (drums); Jimmy Greene (Tenor & Soprano Sax); Derrick Gardner (trumpet); Steve Kirby (accoustic bass) and Will Bonness (piano):
Notes on Curtis Nowosad:
New York-based drummer, composer, and bandleader, Curtis Nowosad, has developed a reputation as a highly-skilled, versatile, and forward-thinking musician. A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Curtis became recognized as one of the faces of the new generation of jazz players in Canada, and he has performed with such world-class jazz musicians as Philip Harper, Donny McCaslin, Stefon Harris, Miguel Zenón, Jack Wilkins, George Colligan, Dave Douglas, and Steve Wilson. He has performed with two NEA Jazz Masters, Candido Camero and Jimmy Owens, and recently recorded with a third, pianist Kenny Barron.
His sophomore album, Dialectics, will be released in March 2015 on Vancouver-based Cellar Live Records, and features Jimmy Greene on tenor saxophone, Derrick Gardner on trumpet, Steve Kirby on bass, and Will Bonness on piano. It was recently named one of “Fourteen jazz CDs to look forward to in early 2015” by Peter Hum at the Ottawa Citizen. His debut album, The Skeptic & the Cynic, released in late 2012, spent two weeks at #1 on the !earshot Canadian Jazz Charts. The album showcases Curtis’ arrangements of contemporary pop material such as Bob Marley and Michael Jackson, along with his quintet and special guest and two-time Grammy nominee Taylor Eigsti on piano.
Curtis has performed on many high-profile stages, including New York jazz clubs Smalls, Smoke, and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, as well as Edmonton’s Yardbird Suite, Vancouver’s Cellar Jazz Club, Toronto’s The Rex Hotel, and several Canadian Jazz Festivals, including the Ottawa Jazz Festival and the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.
A recipient of several awards and scholarships, Curtis recently performed at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam, as a winner of the Keep an Eye Jazz Award. He has twice been selected to participate in the Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead residency at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, and in 2012, he attended the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at the Banff Centre. He is currently a graduate student and Fellow of the Jazz Institute at Manhattan School of Music, where he is a student of John Riley, and performs with the multi-Grammy nominated MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Bobby Sanabria; he holds a Bachelor of Jazz Studies from the University of Manitoba, where he mentored with master drummers Terreon Gully and Quincy Davis.
Curtis can be heard on several other recordings, including Erin Propp’s WCMA-winning/JUNO-nominated Courage, My Love, Alfa’s Harmattan, Neil Watson’s Move!, Oshima’s The Age of Shapes, The Lytics’ They Told Me, and Keith Price’s Gaia/Goya, and Breakfast of Champions, as well as Farewell 274: Winnipeg’s Jazz Community Celebrates Aqua Books, a live compilation album that he produced.
He is also active as an educator and clinician, working with private students, high school bands, and jazz camps, as well as teaching for two years in the University of Manitoba’s Bridge program, which provides music education to inner city students, many of whom are new Canadians. He previously hosted his own radio show on 101.5 UMFM called Tomorrow Is the Question! He has also curated several jazz and world music series at Aqua Books in Win
