The classic and contemporary blend into Joe Ferrara: New Voice Album Release "The Tiger Walks My Dreams" next October 20

The present day "jazz" vocalist owes as much to the likes of Harry Nilsson, David Bowie, John Lydon and Sam Cooke as he does to Frank Sinatra, Joao Gilberto, Chet Baker and Mark Murphy. Or at least he should. What is modern music after all but the assemblage of a century's worth of risk taking, experimentation, and innovation. Joe Ferrara is an artist that understands the value of all musical pathways and has immersed himself at one time or another in a wide range of musical disciplines. He is the sum of all of his influences and it shows well on his latest musical endeavor "The Tiger Walks Through My Dreams" a big band hybrid of Latin music, exotica, rock, jazz, surf, and cinematic sounds with Ferrara's versatile croon holding it all together, seamlessly shifting from operatic baritone to soulful drawl to emotive falsetto, matching at every turn the diversity of arranger Tim Ouimette's orchestrations.

"How Can it Be" couples lighting fast bebop with spaghetti western guitar riffs and rapid fire Hammond organ over which we are treated to a sortie of lyrical images: Dionysian fires, Technicolor dreams and captive symphonies. "Whiskey Island' is the bastard son of a film noir crime theme and a smoked out stream of consciousness torch song. 'The heart is a lonely Hunter' marries Bossa nova and spooky Theremin with a filtered vocal that explodes into a bel canto tenor in a finale worthy of a 1970's movie montage. "The New Lords" proclaims, "the fogs of Locustland make ashtrays of decent men" over a speedy jazz waltz with pointillistic brass and firestorm piano. "Arsenic and Absinthe" is the album at it's starkest, with Ferrara's vocals way up front in the mix over a track that is equal parts Henry Mancini and David Lynch. Ferrara's take on Morrissey's "Dial-a-Cliche" features controlled phrasing over an arrangement reminiscent of miles Davis's 'Sketches of Spain" while Tom Waits' "All the world is Green" assumes a Mediterranean flavor with vocals channeling the spirit of a Neapolitan street singer. With these two songs in particular Ferrara's has managed to do what so few of his finger snapping, cheeky contemporaries have, to carry on the tradition of interpretive vocalizing by showcasing contemporary songs and interpreting them with an approach devoid of kitsch, or even worse, irony. He has also avoided muddying the waters by not taking liberties with anything that can be construed as "Rat Packy" or of the "Neo-Swing." Mr. Ferrara, it would appear, is not in the nostalgia business. Of the albums four non-original tracks only two can even be remotely considered standards and as with the others, the arrangements and vocals stray far from the realm of parody. "Night Song" from the Broadway show Golden Boy is more Brian Wilson than Bernstein and "The Big Hurt" is a sci-fi samba with an ethereal Morricone choir. In a musical landscape that is replete with drum and guitar duos, laptop artists, lofi singer songwriters and an overall penchant for minimalism, it is refreshing to hear an ambitious take on pop music that for a lack of a better word is maximal, and makes no apologies for being so. Indeed, while most of what we hear today is are sparse musically, like a box of macaroni and cheese (the four-for-a-dollar kind), "The Tiger Walks Through My Dreams is like three or four Thanksgiving meals in one day. Pull yourself up to the table and dig in, I say.

Notes on Joe Ferrara:

Joe Ferrara is both a singer and entertainer. In keeping with that great American pedigree that began with Jolson, which in turn evolved into the likes of Sinatra, Joe has honed his skills not within the safe confines of academia, but in nightclubs, bars, lounges, concert halls, and other stages throughout North America.  His experiences as a steadily working musician and performer in jazz bands, rock groups, Avant-garde ensembles, and in theater, have shaped the young Mr. Ferrara into the well rounded performer that he is today.   No mere nostalgia act, nor a pin-up idol, Joe approaches each song he sings with the assurance and authenticity of one who has “lived it” and performs with an emotional depth that belies his youth, while utilizing phrasing that demonstrates a deep understanding and respect for the craft of song.  A wearer of many musical hats, Joe Ferrara is also a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and recording engineer.  As vocalist and primary songwriter for the rock band Father Divine, he has graced stages throughout the United States and Canada, and shared bills with artists such as Fishbone, Kings X, Andrian Belew, Mudhoney, Seplutura, and Stone Temple Pilots.  He has also worked as a nightclub entertainer with various acts in the greater New York area such as, Harvey and The Wallbangers,  Jump the Gun, The Renditions, and The Amish Outlaws.  He has been the featured vocalist for The Hyesson Hong Jazz Ensemble, The New York University Jazz Ensemble, and The PowerhouseBig Band and has performed with the Les Paul trio, Manhattan Swing, and countless other bands.   Known for his ability to seamlessly switch from soft, emotional R&B styling, to well-articulated Jazz phrasing, to over the top rock and roll wailing, Joe studied with world renowned vocal coach Marion Cowings while perusing a  B.A. in Music Technology at NYU.   Some of  Joe’s recording credits  include “The Great American Pastime,” “The Paradigm Shift,”"Uglytown” and “Requiem For Intellect” by Father Divine,  “War All The Time” by Naked,  “Pop Star”  by Jeff Wave “For the Love of it All” by HoodwinkDover as well as countless sessions as a guitarist, bassist, vocalist, arranger, voice-over artist, and producer/engineer.  Future projects include the Soundtrack to “The Wonderworld of K.Gordon Murray” and  “The Street of Dreams,”an album of Jazz Standards with trumpeter extraordinaire, Tim Ouimette.

October 7, 2014 will be the launch of the new album by Rick Lang "That's What I Love About Christmas"

These are expressions of the own Rick Lang, about her new CD dedicated to Christmas:

I am thrilled to tell you we have recently put the finishing touches on a brand new Christmas album (my second) that is scheduled for release in October of this year. Entitled “That’s What I Love About Christmas,” this one has a heavy jazz influence…breaking new ground for me as a songwriter. Produced by my good friend Stephen Mougin, the recording features a wonderful group of musicians and singers from the Nashville area chosen for the project. The Yuletide Jazz Ensemble includes Annie Sellick, Jana and Stephen Mougin, Aaron Till, Pat Bergeson, Todd Parks, Chris Brown, Joe Davidian, Ron Block and Sierra Hull.
A year in the making, “That’s What I Love About Christmas” is one of the coolest project have ever been a part of. Truth be told I was not even planning on recording another Christmas record for a few more years. This was truly an album of destiny. Here is how it all unfolded. In the winter of 2013 I asked Stephen to demo a couple of my Christmas songs to add to my song demo catalog. After hearing the tunes he said they might sound really nice in a jazz setting. Stephen knew some really good players in the Nashville jazz scene…so I said why not give it a shot.
He then set up a session with jazz guitarist Pat Bergeson, bassist Todd Parks, drummer Chris Brown and Stephen would handle the lead vocals. Had no idea what they would sound like, but when I listened to the completed demos I almost fell off my chair. They were fantastic!
A couple weeks later I asked Stephen about the possibility if recording a full album with that same Jazz feel…he was all for it. Had to do some re-writing and re-arranging but came up with enough material to make it all work. The album was recorded pretty much live in three separate sessions. The harmony and background vocals were added later. A.J. Schubert took a lot of great photos during the recording sessions as well as filming two music videos. Can’t wait for you to here this new Christmas album. Will have more info as the release gets closer.

The concept of tribute in jazz has become as common as the use of 4/4 time.  But when a tribute is paid to a giant by an artist who has earned her own right to tribute through her personal accomplishments, an entirely new dimension is in play.  Such is the case with Annie Ross’ stunning To Lady with Love – an extraordinary homage to Annie’s personal idol – the immortal Billie Holiday.

This is not simply an “Annie Ross Sings Billie” concept, but rather a deeply heartfelt and powerfully emotional paean to everything Billie – and all truly committed artists who’ve chosen jazz as their language of spiritual communication – represents.  Of the ten songs on the album that had been recorded by Lady Day, seven are from her shattering Lady in Satinalbum.  To those who are familiar with Billie’s tragic and heartbreaking saga, that album epitomizes the core of her artistry in its rawest form.  Recorded in the final stages of her pain-ridden life, at a time when her beautifully fragile voice had lost its purity and cornet-like clarity, Billie transcended such earthbound qualities to deliver musical performances that captured the essence of artistry and spirituality in their purest and most palpable form – almost unbearable in sheer intensity and hardcore truth.

This is the substance that Annie pursues here – and captures fully.  While Lady in Satin surrounded Billie with strings and chorus, Annie chose the polar opposite for her expression – the brilliant father and son guitar tandem of Bucky and John Pizzarelli.  The unity of purpose and the utterly captivating sense of shared love that these three consummate artists express throughout this enthralling endeavor are simply overwhelming. As Annie summarizes in the DVD interview with all three artists that is included in this package:

“It was done with a whooooole lot of Love.”

And that love is exquisitely expressed in every moment of this remarkable CD.

As expected by the guitarists’ impeccable artistry, their contributions are marvelous, whether complementing Annie in the structural context or in their solos, which are always sensitively appropriate to the music. Sometimes the guitars provide a perfectly constructed silk and velvet cushion to display the jewel of Annie’s vocal splendor; at others they create a mesmerizing atmosphere of gossamer mist as they swirl about the core of her vocal.

Although there are eleven songs – the ten associated with Lady Day and an original by Annie and Russ Freeman that closes out the album – one must really consider this album as if it is a single piece of music; like a suite, or from another perspective, a theatrical presentation.

The unifying focus is balladry in its most vividly crafted and viscerally emotional form.  The individual songs, all quite familiar and all ranging somewhere between very beautiful and absolutely gorgeous, are nonetheless secondary to the aesthetic and spiritual substance of the performance - somewhat in the manner that Ingrid Bergman’s great beauty became irrelevant in the shadow of her acting.  And that comparison has a very appropriate meaning here, for as the eminent commentator on the art of song Will Friedwald says in his excellent liner notes, “Annie’s approach has much more to do with the notion of acting than it does with the way that most people understand the word ‘singing’ today.”

Annie often blends an almost spoken-word approach into her vocals here, most notably on I Don’t Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You, When Your Love Has Gone and I Get Along Without You Very Well, adding an extra poignancy to the message of acceptance and determination in the face of lost love.  And yet the sheer loveliness of the songs’ lyricism is not only undiminished, but enhanced by her delivery.

Dramatic expressiveness is a major element in Annie’s stylistic approach, sometimes through a deliciously tantalizing use of suspension, best exemplified on For All We Know, in the filigree sensitivity and heart-wrenching emotion of You Don’t Know What Love Is, and on It’s Easy to Remember, a journey into sheer beauty.  And sometimes it’s by means of incandescently passionate fire as in I’m a Fool to Want You, where the pain and sense of endless deprivation is blisteringly palpable.

Although there is no departure from ballad mode, an almost jaunty tempo is achieved on the breathtakingly beautiful Violets for Your Furs, and a somewhat bluesy You’ve Changed – both stoked by old-school guitar strumming underneath.  And Travelin’ Light – true to its title – is a compelling and delightful bounce.

The overarching concept of the album is further expressed by the pieces that bookend the eleven Holiday-associated songs.  The deeply moving opening item, To Lady is a short spoken dedication to Lady Day that still contains the art of song in its delivery; and the final track, Music Is Forever, provides an ideal final statement, fully summarizing what this album is all about.

As a bonus, the DVD that is included in the set offers interviews with all three artists, providing a vivid look at the intimate connection that they have with each other, and the impact that this music had upon them.

To Lady with Love is what the concept of tribute is supposed to be in its purest form. It honors not just the artist of its focus, but the Truth and profundity that is in the heart and soul of that artist. On one level, this album is a powerful, evocative and sometimes haunting portrait, crafted with intimacy, subtlety and enormous artistry. On another, it is the substance to which all artists strive to achieve in its universal message of love, pain and the fragility of the human condition.

ERNIE WATTS NEW RELEASE “A SIMPLE TRUTH”

"A MUSICAL REFLECTION ON THE ARC OF A 'JAZZ' DAY"

“A Simple Truth” (FD 1009) is the latest release from two-time Grammy Award winning saxophonist Ernie Watts.  Scheduled for a street date of September 30, 2014 from the artist’s Flying Dolphin Records, this is the latest in a series recorded with his Ernie Watts Quartet.  “A Simple Truth” is a concept album; a journey through a “jazz day,” starting with early morning daybreak.   Watts chose LA pianist Ron Feuer to create the lush orchestral opening, “The Sound: Morning,” and closing, “The Sound: Evening”
with Watts improvising over both pieces, which encircle the Quartet tunes.

Sunrise gives way to the exquisite ballad “No Lonely Nights” by Keith Jarrett, which begins with an a cappela saxophone solo, a meditation to start the morning.  Time moves forward with “The Road We’re On,” written by Quartet drummer Heinrich Koebberling, a track that swings with its expansion from a blues foundation.   Watts’ original piece “Acceptance” follows, accenting the rising tempo of midday with increasing energy.

But even an energetic Watts composition is always based in melody, the foundation for his high-flying improvisations, connecting with his ability to communicate on multiple levels.  Next, the intense heat of Dizzy Gillespie’s “Bebop” hits, at day’s peak.   “Hope In the Face of Despair,” written by Billy Childs, moves the group into warm but pensive reflection.  And as the jazz day winds down, we relax into the gentle sounds of “A Simple Truth,” another Watts original.

The project was recorded in Cologne, Germany, with the touring European Ernie Watts Quartet, together for over 15 years.  The wordless conversation between these players has become quite deep and rich, over time.  Watts named this collection of music “A Simple Truth”--his understanding of music as one of the prime human basics that connects people, going right past language, ethnicity, culture and even history, into direct feeling.

In March of 2014, Watts received the prestigious Frankfurt Music Prize at the Frankfurt MusikMesse. Founded in 1980, the Frankfurt Music Prize is presented annually for special achievements in music performance, composition, musicology, teaching, or service to music. Per the Frankfurt Music Prize Foundation, Watts was “selected for his strikingly melodic saxophone style and his original tone language, with which he has already enriched several generations of musicians,” to which they added, “He has generated an impressive artistic legacy.”

After 16 albums as a leader, for a variety of labels large and small, Watts started Flying Dolphin Records in 2004,in partnership with his wife Patricia.  The label is distributed by City Hall Records in the US and Laika Records in Europe.
