New Book: Jazz in the New Millennium: Live and Well By Rick Mitchell

New Book:

Jazz In the New Millennium: Live and Well

By Rick Mitchell

Photos by Pin Lim

Houston, TX (October 22, 2014):

Dharma Moon Press, in partnership with Da Camera of Houston, announces the national publication of Jazz In the New Millennium: Live and Well, by Rick Mitchell, with color photography by Pin Lim.

From Randy Weston, Roy Haynes and Wayne Shorter to Jason Moran, Robert Glasper and Esperanza Spalding, Jazz In the New Millennium profiles nearly 60 leading jazz artists who are keeping the tradition alive and well in the 21st Century. The book features the musicians reflecting on their own music, as well as on the state of the art form 100 years after its birth, and demonstrates why jazz continues to thrive creatively despite commercial neglect and the dumbing down of popular culture.

Author Rick Mitchell has been writing about music for 40 years, and has published three books, including Whiskey River (Take My Mind): The True Story of Texas Honky Tonk(University of Texas Press, 2007). Since 2000, he has been the jazz program notes annotator for Da Camera of Houston, for which these interviews were originally conducted. In that period, Da Camera has presented many of the leading figures in jazz, including nearly every young artist who has come on the scene in the 21st Century.

Jazz In the New Millennium (160 pages, 8 x 11, paper) will be of interest to both serious and casual jazz listeners who would like to know more about the artists who make the music, as well as teachers, students and the musicians themselves. The book includes selected career discographies for each artist, as well as Mitchell’s Jazz In the New Millennium playlists, featuring one post-2000 track per artist. The discographies and playlist tracks can be purchased at Amazon.

The print version ($24.95) is currently available in a limited edition at
www.rickmitchell.uswww.dacamera.com and at retail outlets in Houston. The eBook ($9.99) is available nationally through iBookstore, Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble and other digital media outlets, as well as at www.rickmitchell.us.

“Rick Mitchell’s lively, clear overview of stars energizing jazz since 2000 confirms that the music is as immediate and refreshing as ever, with greater reach than is generally acknowledged,” says Howard Mandel, president of the Jazz Journalists Association. “Read Jazz In the New Millennium to meet artists you’ll like to hear, and connect with the homegrown sounds bubbling all around us.”

Review copies are available upon request, and Rick Mitchell is available for print and radio interviews. To contact the author directly, please visit

The Urban Renewal Project has been kicking around the Pacific Coast for the better part of four years, using the instruments of a bygone era to create a signature sound that blurs the boundaries between pop, soul, jazz and hip-hop. The band’s dynamic live performances have captivated listeners and brought audiences to their feet in packed rooms from The House of Blues in LA to Rockwood Music Hall in NYC. With the combined vocal talents of jazz singer Aubrey Logan and freestyle rap virtuoso Elmer Demond, the URP is back with its sophomore release in Local Legend. The album’s nine original tracks draw from an eclectic variety of styles—including R&B, swing, and West African highlife—while remaining unified by the melodic ear worms and hip-shaking grooves that characterize the group’s sound. Their debut release, Go Big or Go Home (2012), was called “one of the most exciting hybrid releases to come along in some time,” and the follow-up does not disappoint. Local Legend will be available September 23, 2014 on Amazon, iTunes, Spotify, and everywhere else!

“It is truly amazing to see musicians who can play legitimate jazz and funk music in such a big way. Plenty of groups play hip hop with a jazz tone, but not like this. The talent and precision it takes to pull off a sound of such magnitude is beyond impressive.”
—Gerry Doot, LA Music Blog

“... if you had to choose a band to spend a day with, this is definitely the one you’d want to be around. The fun energy with this band can be heard on the music from their new CD, which blends a rich gumbo of jazz, pop, soul and hip-hop... there are tracks here that will provide the perfect upbeats for a great party.”

We’re excited to bring you the exclusive unveiling of the brand new music video for “We Big Tonight,” a bumping hip-hop tune featuring The Urban Renewal Project‘s big horn section and freestyle rapper Elmer Demond, featuring a soulful vocal hook by Jazz singer Aubrey Logan.
Songwriter-arranger-saxophonist R.W. Enoch on the song:
“We really wanted to recreate the sound of modern hip-hop music using our traditional jazz instrumentation, and do it in a way that was still totally bangin’—where you’d still want to hear it through the subs in your car or out at the club. The video matches the tone of the music and lyrics in the song. It’s set at an underground hip-hop show, where the crowd is taking a few tropes from rap-culture and turning them on their ear.”
Elmer Demond on the song:
“This song was my way of telling the world what we already knew: that we are a really big deal. I really feel like our past video shoots were just preparing us for this one. I felt like we were finally receiving that big-deal treatment.”

Eugene Marlow and His Heritage Ensemble release CD "Mosaica" November 1ro., 2014 at Brooklyn Heights Library

Mosaica, the new CD from keyboardist/arranger Eugene Marlow's highly acclaimed Heritage Ensemble featuring Bobby Sanabria (Latin Jazz Living Legend) on drums/percussion, Michael Hashim on saxophones, Frank Wagner on bass, Matthew Gonzalez on percussion and, on four tracks, Shira Lissek on vocals.

"The title of this album-the combination of the two words (musika and mosaic) -is purposeful," says Marlow. "The Heritage Ensemble reimagines popular melodies Hebraic melodies in various jazz, Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian, and classical styles. This is why the New York City Jazz Recordcalled the ensemble 'a cross-cultural collaboration that spins and grooves.' Instead of small, usually colored pieces of inlaid stone, our materials are small, black notes on a page and the influences of various musical cultures."

“Mosaica” is scheduled to be released on November 1, which is also the date of The Heritage Ensemble’s popular annual concert at the Brooklyn Heights Library.

"The 'Zikkaron/Kristallnacht (Remembrance) Special Version' track features aural effects and a narration by my Aunt Ruth who survived Kristallnacht ("The Night of Broken Glass") in Leipzig, Germany in 1938," says Marlow.  "Mosaica attempts to convey a picture of the possibilities of cultural collaboration through music."

Eugene Marlow Notes:

Eugene Marlow is a composer/arranger, producer, presenter, performer, author, journalist, and educator who has written 240+ classical and jazz compositions for solo instruments, jazz and classical chamber groups, and jazz big band.

Under his MEII Enterprises indie label, he has produced 10 CDs of original compositions and arrangements. “Celebrations: Festive Melodies from the Hebraic Songbook” (MEII Enterprises 2010), garnered over two dozen reviews and mentions and extensive radio play in the United States, Canada, and Europe. The New York City Jazz Record called “A Fresh Take” (MEII Enterprises 2011) “. . . a cross-cultural collaboration than spins and grooves.” Marlow received a “Creative Connections” grant from Meet the Composer in 2010 for his work with The Heritage Ensemble, a quintet that performs Marlow's original compositions and arrangements in various jazz, Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian, and classical styles. Marlow is in the throes of producing a fourth album from his Heritage Ensemble entitled: "Mosaica: Eugene Marlow's Heritage Ensemble Reimagines Popular Hebraic Melodies." It is due in early November 2014.

"In Their Own Voice, Vol I: Eugene Marlow & Amelie Cherubin" is the beginning of a series of digital-only, mini-albums featuring Marlow's original compositions and lyrics and vocals by female artists. A second album in the series--"Eugene Marlow & Anne Mironchik: A Perfect Storm"--was released in late August 2014. There are eight digital only, mini-albums projected in the series for 2014-2015.

Three of his charts for big band have appeared on three separate Grammy-nominated albums. “El Aché de Sanabria” appears on Bobby Sanabria’s Grammy-nominated "Big Band Urban Folktales” (2007 Jazzheads). His reconstruction and arrangement of “Me Acuerdo De Ti,” originally recorded by Tito Puente, appears on the 2011 Latin-Grammy nominated “Tito Puente Masterworks Live!” recorded by the Manhattan School of Music Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra (Jazzheads 2011). "Broken Heart" appears on the Grammy nominated "Multiverse" album (Jazzheads 2012) , also from Bobby Sanabria. His "Let There Be Swing" can be heard on the recently released "Que Viva Harlem" album (Jazzheads 2014) recorded by the Manhattan School of Music Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Bobby Sanabria. This album received 4 1/2 stars from Downbeat Magazine.

Marlow is senior co-chair of the Milt Hinton Jazz Perspectives Concert Series at Baruch College (The City University of New York), now in its 23th season, where he teaches courses in media and culture. Author of eight books and 400+ articles, he has drafted a book on jazz in China. He is a 2010 recipient of the James W. Carey award for journalism excellence from the Media Ecology Association for his numerous contributions to www.jazz.com. He has been a recent frequent contributor to JazzEd Magazine.

Dr. Marlow is a former member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, and current member of the Jazz Journalists Association, the New York Composers Circle, Chamber Music America, American Composers Forum, and the National Music Publishers Association. He is a voting member of The Recording Academy.

In this video they can find the answer to valuable draft Eugene Marlow and His Heritage Ensemble...Enjoy it:
