Richard Sussman - The Evolution Suite
Richard Sussman's creative work in the area of music technology has coalesced into a new ensemble and major new musical composition - "The Evolution Suite" - which features Sussman's skill as a cutting edge composer, performer, and programmer in this realm. The music for this ensemble integrates Sussman's many varied influences and areas of expertise, including straight ahead jazz, electronics, contemporary classical composition, and pop music. The ensemble features members of the acclaimed Sirius String Quartet along with top jazz artists includingScott Wendholt-trumpet, Rich Perry-tenor sax, Mike Richmond-acoustic and electric bass, Anthony Pinciotti-drums, and Sussmanperforming on piano, synthesizer, and laptop, with special guest Zach Broch-violin. The result is a truly cutting edge blend of highly original and marketable music with a completely contemporary appeal.
Sussman was honored to receive a Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grant in 2014 to compose a multi-movement suite of new music for this ensemble. The new music will have its World and New York City premieres on December 18, 19, and 20, 2015. The suite will consist of five contrasting movements, each highlighting various stylistic and instrumental elements, and will be approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour in duration. The entire program will be approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes in duration, with the inclusion of one or two additional Sussman compositions.
Richard Sussman Bio
Richard Sussman is an accomplished jazz pianist, composer, synthesist, and educator. His varied career as a performer has included performances and/or recordings with such diverse artists as Lionel Hampton, Lee Konitz, Buddy Rich, Houston Person, Randy Brecker, Steve Slagle, Blood Sweat & Tears, David Sanborn, Marty Balin, Country Joe McDonald, Carly Simon, and Donna Summer. His jazz discography includes four albums of original music as a leader, including the critically acclaimed "Free Fall" (Double-Time Records), "Live At Sweet Rhythm" (Origin Records), and most recently "Continuum" (Origin). "Continuum", released in June 2012, highlights original compositions by Richard performed by an all-star quintet featuring Randy Brecker-tpt & flg hrn, Jerry Bergonzi-tnr sx, Mike Richmond-bs, Jeff Williams-dr, Richard-pno & synthesizer, with a cameo appearance by guitarist Mike Stern on one tune.
Richard's large-scale jazz and orchestral compositions have been performed by the Village Vanguard Orchestra, the Westchester Jazz Orchestra, the Metropole Orchestra, the Manhattan School of Music Jazz Orchestra, and the American Composers Orchestra, to name a few. He has received two NEA grants in Jazz Composition, as well as the prestigious ASCAP Jazz Composition Award in 2008. He was selected to be a participant in the Jazz Composers Orchestra Institute, sponsored by the American Composers Orchestra, in August 2012, and was subsequently selected to compose a new composition for orchestra which was premiered by the ACO in June, 2013.
