Guitarist Bill Frisell's first Resident Artistic Director week begins with two nights of duos and trios, first with pianist Geri Allen and saxophonist Greg Osby, followed by bassist Thomas Morgan and the eclectic vocalist and violinist Petra Haden. On Saturday, Frisell's Beautiful Dreamers trio collaborates live with cartoonist Jim Woodring in a riveting multi-media presentation. Sunday brings most of the week's performers together for a unique night of musical encounters.
This week, we celebrate the global concept of "south" with four incredibly diverse concerts. Called "the most charismatic performer of Indian Ragas" by The New York Times, sarod master Amjad Ali Khan kicks off the week, followed by a command performance by Texas-born jazz singer Kellye Gray. On Saturday, New Orleans icon Allen Toussaint performs a rollicking concert of solo piano, and Cuban music phenomenon Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club with Omara Portuondo, Eliades Ochoa and Guajiro Mirabal wrap the week.
Regina Carter's week includes a violin summit with Carter, Jenny Scheinman and Sara Caswell. Next, Carter joins Argentine piano virtuoso Pablo Ziegler's quartet for an evening dedicated to tango giant Astor Piazzolla and Ziegler's own compositions. Pianist Kenny Barron performs with Carter in an intimate duet setting, and the week ends with her band, joined by vocalist Carla Cook and the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars.
Kevin Johansen, one of today’s most fun, deep, playful, smart and thoughtful artists in Latino singer-songwriter music, performs at the SFJAZZ Center for the 35th anniversary of Instituto Familiar de la Raza. This concert is part of the Hope and Healing Concert Series benefiting IFR. Opening by: David Aguilar
